How Local Service Businesses Should Set Up Google Analytics 4
A GA4 setup that answers the only three questions a local business owner needs: where did they come from, what did they do, and did it convert?
Google Analytics 4 replaced Universal Analytics with an event-based model that is powerful but poorly explained. Most local businesses install the default tag, look at the default reports, and conclude that GA4 is useless. It isn't — it just needs 20 minutes of intentional configuration.
Step 1: Create a clean property structure
Create one GA4 property per business. Use a data stream for the website and, if relevant, a separate stream for a web app or booking widget. Enable enhanced measurement for page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, and form interactions — but disable 'video engagement' unless you actually host long-form video.
Step 2: Define your key events
- form_submit — every contact, estimate, or booking form
- phone_click — tel: link clicks from mobile
- directions_click — Google Maps link clicks
- page_view on /thank-you — confirmation page visits
- file_download — PDF guides, checklists, or brochures
Step 3: Mark conversions
In GA4, any event can be a conversion. Toggle 'form_submit' and 'phone_click' as conversions immediately. These are your north-star metrics — everything else is context.
Step 4: Build the one report you need
Create an Exploration report with Session source/medium as rows and Conversions as values. Add a filter for Session medium = organic / cpc / referral. This single report tells you which channels bring leads, not just traffic.
Step 5: Connect Search Console and Ads
Link Google Search Console to see organic query data inside GA4. Link Google Ads to see cost and ROAS alongside conversions. Both integrations take two clicks and unlock the only cross-channel view that matters.
What to ignore
- Engagement rate as a primary KPI — it's directional, not actionable
- Real-time reports — fun to watch, irrelevant for weekly decisions
- Demographic affinity categories — too broad to inform local marketing
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Google Analytics 4 consultant?
Not for the setup above — it's 20 minutes of focused work. You need help when you want custom attribution models, server-side tracking, or cross-domain measurement.
How long before GA4 data is useful?
GA4 starts collecting data immediately, but meaningful trend analysis needs 30 days minimum. Set it up before you need the report.
Can GA4 track phone calls from my website?
It can track clicks on tel: links. For true call tracking with recording and attribution, you need a call tracking number provider like CallRail or our built-in call attribution.
