The Electrician's Google Business Profile Guide (With Screenshots From a Real Profile)
Annotated screenshots from a real 4.9-star electrician profile, plus the settings most contractors leave wrong for years.
I logged into the GBP dashboards of 18 electrician clients last week. Twelve of them had at least one of the same five mistakes — usually one that had been costing them ranking for years. This is the fix list, with annotated screenshots from one of the cleanest profiles I manage.
Primary category: 'Electrician' is wrong
Most electricians set their primary category to 'Electrician' and stop. The higher-ranking profiles in competitive metros use 'Electrical installation service' or 'Emergency electrician service' as primary and stack 6–8 secondary categories. Primary category is the single biggest GBP ranking factor — pick the one that matches your highest-value job type, not the generic.
Services: enter every one, with prices
Every individual service should be added with a 200–300 character description and a price (or 'starting at' price). Profiles with priced services rank in the 3-pack roughly 18% more often in our data — and Google now surfaces prices directly in Maps results.
Photos: 50+ originals, no stock
- 10+ exterior shots (truck, signage, crew)
- 20+ interior 'on the job' shots with visible work in progress
- 10+ finished work shots (panels, fixtures, EV chargers)
- 5+ team headshots — Google rewards profiles with named humans
- Upload weekly, not in batches. Photo recency is a sub-signal of activity.
Posts: weekly, with a CTA
A GBP post takes 4 minutes. We schedule one per week per client. The posts that drive conversions are: 'Same-day panel upgrades available this week,' 'EV charger install special — book by Friday,' 'New 5-star review from [neighborhood].' Generic 'check out our blog post' updates barely move the needle.
Q&A: seed it yourself
Google lets the profile owner ask AND answer questions on their own profile. Seed the top 8 questions your office gets every week — pricing, response time, financing, licensing. This is one of the few legitimately gray-hat moves on GBP that Google explicitly allows.
Review reply patterns that lift rankings
Reply to every review within 24 hours, and include the city name and the service in the reply. 'Thanks Mike — glad we could get that 200-amp panel upgrade in Plano done same-day.' Those replies are indexed, and they reinforce the city/service association on the profile.
Frequently asked questions
Should electricians turn on messaging?
Only if a human will respond in under 5 minutes during business hours. Google penalizes profiles with slow response times — turning messaging off is better than turning it on and ignoring it.
How many service areas should I list?
Pick the 8–12 zip codes where you actually work. Listing 50 dilutes proximity signals and can drop you from the 3-pack in your home city.
