How to Rank in the Google Map Pack: The 2026 Working Method

Proximity you can't change. Relevance and prominence you can. Here's the order of operations that moves grid rankings fastest.

The map pack is decided by three inputs: proximity, relevance, and prominence. Proximity is fixed by your address. Everything else is work you can do this month. The mistake most owners make is chasing prominence — links and reviews — before fixing relevance, which is cheaper and faster.

Step 1: Fix relevance first

  • Primary category must match the highest-volume term you want to win, not the broadest description of your business
  • Add every applicable secondary category, but never ones you don't perform
  • Fill the services list with real service names, each with a written description
  • Use products for named offers with prices where it fits
  • Match your website's service page titles to the service names on the profile

Step 2: Build review velocity, not review count

A profile earning eight reviews a month consistently outperforms one that earned 300 reviews three years ago. Automate the request off job completion, ask by SMS within an hour of the tech leaving, and respond to every review. Mentions of the service and the city inside review text reinforce relevance for those terms.

Step 3: Post weekly

Posts are a freshness and relevance signal and a conversion surface. One post per week naming a real service, a real neighborhood, and a clear next action outperforms monthly generic updates. Attach real job photos with descriptive filenames.

Step 4: Measure with a grid, not a single rank

Your ranking is different at every point in your service area. A 7x7 grid shows coverage — where you're in the three-pack and where you fall out at four miles. That map tells you which neighborhoods need service-area pages and which posts to write next month.

Step 5: Support with on-site signals

  • LocalBusiness schema with matching NAP and service list
  • One indexable page per core service and per real service city
  • Embedded map and driving directions on the contact page
  • Internal links from service pages to city pages and back
  • Page speed under 2.5s LCP on mobile — slow pages suppress conversion, which suppresses the behavior signals Google watches

What doesn't work in 2026

Mass citation blasts, keyword-stuffed business names, fake service addresses, and review gating. Each carries suspension risk and none of them produce durable grid improvement.

Realistic timeline

Category and service corrections can move rankings in one to two weeks. Review velocity and post cadence compound over 60 to 90 days. Service-area coverage — winning grid points three or more miles out — is typically a four to six month project.

Frequently asked questions

How many reviews do I need to rank in the map pack?

There's no threshold. What matters is being competitive with the current three-pack in your grid area and sustaining a steady inflow rather than a burst.

Does my website affect map pack rankings?

Yes. Relevance signals from your site's service and city pages, plus schema and speed, feed the profile's ranking for those terms.

Can I rank outside my city?

You can rank at grid points across your service area, but proximity still decays. Service-area pages and local review mentions extend that radius; they don't eliminate it.
