Painting Company Marketing: 11 Ideas That Actually Worked (From Real Accounts)

Eleven marketing ideas we've tested on real painting companies — with the revenue numbers, including the ones that flopped.

I run marketing for four residential painting companies and one commercial painting franchise. These are the ideas that actually generated revenue in the last 18 months, with numbers. The two that flopped are at the end — they're worth knowing about so you don't waste your money.

1. The neighborhood color sampler campaign

Direct mail postcard with five trending exterior color combos for that specific neighborhood, plus a 'free color consultation' QR code. Cost per piece: $0.68. Conversion to booked consultation: 1.4%. ROI on a $480K-revenue painting company over 90 days: 6.2x.

2. Before/after Reels with the homeowner's face

Get the homeowner to do a 15-second 'reveal' Reel when the job is done. Tag them, tag the neighborhood. The single best one we shipped got 240K organic views and generated 19 quote requests.

3. HOA newsletter sponsorships

$150–$400 per quarter to be the 'preferred painter' in HOA newsletters. Three of our painters do this in 10–20 HOAs each and book $80K–$150K/yr from those alone.

4. The Nextdoor neighborhood lead

Nextdoor Business pages with daily posts of recent work (with the street name in the caption, not the full address) consistently outperform Facebook for painters. CPC equivalent: roughly half of Facebook.

5. Cabinet refinishing landing page

Most painters bury cabinet refinishing inside an 'interior painting' page. A dedicated /cabinet-refinishing-[city] page ranks fast and has a higher average ticket ($4,800 vs $2,100 for interior rooms) and better margins.

Two that flopped

Yelp Ads — burned $3,200 across two accounts for 4 booked jobs. Door hangers — looks cheap, response rate under 0.1%. Skip both.

Frequently asked questions

What's the highest-margin service for painters?

Cabinet refinishing, then exterior repaints in HOAs with strict color codes. Both have above-average tickets and below-average price competition.

Is Facebook Ads worth it for painters?

Only for retargeting visitors who didn't convert. Cold Facebook traffic for painters has been underperforming organic and LSA for 18 months.
