Remodeler Before/After Galleries: The Format That Books $50K+ Projects

The before/after gallery format that books $50K+ remodel projects — image specs, schema, and the case study template that ranks.

I've built portfolio sites for 11 remodelers in the last 3 years. The ones booking $50K+ kitchens and $40K+ bathrooms all use the same gallery format. The ones still chasing $8K bathroom refresh jobs use Instagram embeds. The difference is structural.

Each project gets its own URL

Not a gallery thumbnail in a lightbox — a real, indexable URL like /portfolio/transitional-kitchen-remodel-westlake. Each one ranks for long-tail style + city queries that generic service pages can't touch ('mid-century modern kitchen remodel Westlake'). One Westlake project page in our portfolio has driven 47 consult requests over 18 months.

The image stack per project

  • Hero: highest-resolution after photo at 1920px wide
  • Before/after slider with 6–10 paired comparisons
  • Process gallery: demo, framing, plumbing/electric, finishes, final
  • Detail shots: hardware, tile, fixtures, custom touches
  • All images compressed to under 250KB each via AVIF
  • Geotagged EXIF data intact — Google reads it

The case study template

Each project page follows the same structure: project at-a-glance card (sq ft, budget range, timeline), homeowner's goals, design decisions, challenges + solutions, materials list with brand names, final reveal, homeowner quote. 1,200–1,800 words of original content per page — none of it generic.

Schema stack for portfolio ranking

CreativeWork + Service + LocalBusiness + Person (designer/lead carpenter byline) + AggregateRating where applicable. The Person byline on each project is the EEAT move most remodelers skip — and it's the difference between ranking and not.

How to source the photography

Hire a real architecture photographer for the top 2 projects per year ($1,200–$2,500 per project). For everything else, train your lead carpenter to shoot with the company iPhone — natural light, wide angles, take 5x more than you think you need. Original photography outranks stock or staged renderings every time in our data.

The CTA that books consults

End of each project page: 'Planning something like this? Our team has [X] years of remodeling experience in [city]. Schedule a 30-minute design consultation.' Link to a calendar booking widget, not a contact form. Calendar-direct consults close at 2.3x the rate of form-fill leads.

Frequently asked questions

Should remodelers publish project budgets?

Yes, in ranges. 'Budget range: $45K–$60K' filters out the homeowner who thinks a kitchen remodel costs $12K and qualifies the one who's ready. Hiding budget retains no useful leads.

How many project pages does a remodeler need?

Minimum 12 to read as established. We target 1 new project page per month on an ongoing basis — 24 over 2 years is usually enough to dominate the city's portfolio-search rankings.
