My business isn't showing up on Google Maps. Here's why — and how to fix it.

Nine times out of ten it is one of six things: the profile isn't verified, it's suspended, it's a duplicate, the address or service area is wrong, the category is wrong, or you're simply outside the search radius you're testing from. Work through them in that order.

Short answer: A business usually doesn't show on Google Maps because the profile is unverified, suspended, duplicated, missing a correct address or service area, filed under the wrong primary category, or because the searcher is too far away. Check verification status first in your Business Profile dashboard, then search your exact business name in Maps — if the listing exists but doesn't rank for service terms, it's a ranking problem, not a visibility problem.

"Not showing up" is two different problems. Diagnose which one you have first.

There is a hard difference between a profile that does not exist in Google's index and a profile that exists but does not rank. The fixes have nothing in common, and most owners waste weeks on the wrong one.

Test it in 30 seconds: search your exact business name plus your city in Google Maps, logged out, on a phone. If the listing appears, Google knows you exist and you have a ranking problem — categories, reviews, proximity, and prominence. If nothing appears, you have a visibility problem — verification, suspension, or a duplicate is eating your listing.

The second trap is testing from your own office. Maps personalizes hard on proximity. Standing inside your shop, you will rank for everything; a homeowner eight miles away may never see you. Always test with a grid of points across the metro, not from your desk.

Once you know which problem you have, the fix list below is ordered by how often each cause is the real one.

Work through these in order

  1. 01
    1. Confirm verification
Open your Business Profile. If it says "Verify now" or the verification is pending, the listing will not surface publicly for most searches. Video verification is now the default for service-area businesses — record it in one take, showing your vehicle, tools, signage, and any mail with the business name.
  2. 02
    2. Rule out suspension
A suspended profile disappears from Maps entirely and the dashboard shows a suspension notice. Soft suspensions keep the listing visible but strip your ability to edit. Both need a reinstatement request, not a new listing — never create a second profile to get around a suspension.
  3. 03
    3. Search for duplicates
Search your phone number and your old address in Maps. Unclaimed duplicates from data aggregators split your reviews and confuse Google about which listing is real. Claim the duplicate, then request a merge — do not just delete it.
  4. 04
    4. Check address and service area
Service-area businesses must hide the street address. If you show a residential address, Google may filter you. Set service areas by city or ZIP, keep the list under about 20 entries, and make sure they actually surround your verified location.
  5. 05
    5. Audit the primary category
The primary category decides which searches you are even eligible for. A roofer filed as "Construction company" will not appear for "roof repair near me" no matter how many reviews they have. Match the primary category to whoever currently holds the three-pack for your money term.
  6. 06
    6. Test with a rank grid, not your desk
Run a geo-grid across the metro to see where you actually appear. Most profiles rank in a tight ring around the verified pin and vanish outside it — that is a prominence problem, and it is what review velocity, posts, and a complete profile fix over 30–90 days.

Other Google Business Profile problems we fix

Profile suspended
Suspensions come in two flavors — soft and hard — and they are almost always triggered by an edit, an address problem, or a guideline violation Google's automated systems flagged. Fix the underlying cause first, then file one clean reinstatement request with evidence.
Verification failed
Video verification is now the default for most service businesses, and it fails for predictable reasons: the recording didn't establish location, didn't show proof of management, or was cut into pieces. One continuous take that hits all three checkpoints passes.
Reviews not showing
Reviews disappear for three reasons: the spam filter caught them, the reviewer's account was flagged, or someone reported them. Most filtered reviews are recoverable, and most are caused by how the review was requested rather than what it said.
Wrong info on profile
Google accepts edits from users, from third-party data, and from its own machine learning. If your hours, address, phone, or category keep reverting, something outside your dashboard is feeding Google a different answer — and until you fix that source, the edits will keep coming back.
Duplicate listing
Duplicates split your reviews, split your ranking signals, and send customers to a phone number you may not even own anymore. The fix is to claim the duplicate and request a merge so the review history consolidates onto the listing you keep.
Someone claimed my listing
Usually it's a former marketing agency, a previous employee, or the person who set the profile up years ago on a personal account. Google has a formal ownership request process, and it works — but only if you can prove the business is yours.

Common questions

How long does it take for a new Google Business Profile to show on Maps?

Usually within a few days of verification, though it can take up to two weeks for the listing to appear consistently across searches. If it has been longer than that and verification is complete, check for a duplicate listing or a pending edit holding the profile in review.

Why does my business show on Google Search but not Google Maps?

That pattern almost always means the profile exists but is being filtered in Maps — commonly a duplicate, an address Google can't validate, or a service-area setup that doesn't match the verified location. It can also mean you simply aren't within the proximity radius Maps is using for that query.

Will creating a new listing fix it?

No, and it usually makes things worse. A second listing for the same business becomes a duplicate, splits your reviews, and can trigger a suspension on both. Fix the listing you have.

Can you find out why my profile isn't showing?

Yes — that is exactly what the free audit does. We check verification, suspension status, duplicates, categories, service areas, and run a rank grid across your metro, then send you the findings in plain language whether or not you hire us.
