Service area business

A service area business (SAB) is a business that travels to customers rather than serving them at its own address — plumbers, roofers, mobile detailing, cleaning companies. On Google Business Profile an SAB hides its street address and instead lists the cities or regions it serves.

The rule that trips owners up: if customers don't come to you, the address must be hidden. Leaving a home address visible on an SAB is one of the most common causes of suspension in home services.

Service areas should be set as the places you genuinely serve, generally as cities, counties, or regions rather than a long list of ZIP codes. Google recommends keeping the total reasonable — a couple of dozen entries at most — and they should surround your verified location.

Hiding the address does not remove proximity from the ranking calculation. Google still uses your verified location to measure distance, so an SAB is strongest near its base and weakens outward. Listing 40 cities does not make you rank in 40 cities.

Why it matters

Nearly every trade business is an SAB, and the setup rules are where profiles get suspended or quietly filtered.

Common questions

Can a service area business rank in multiple cities?

Yes, but ranking strength falls off with distance from the verified location. Strong prominence extends the range; listing more service areas by itself does not.

Should I use a virtual office to rank in another city?

No. Virtual offices, coworking desks, and mailboxes are ineligible addresses and a leading cause of hard suspension.
