Google Business Profile categories
Category selection is the highest-leverage field on the profile and the one most often set wrong. A roofer filed under "Construction company" is not competing for "roof repair" — not ranking badly for it, but not eligible in the first place.
The way to choose is not to read the list and pick what sounds right. It's to look at which businesses currently hold the three-pack for the search you want and find out what primary category they use. Google is telling you the answer.
Secondary categories broaden reach and are effectively free, but only add ones you genuinely serve. Adding "Air conditioning repair service" to a plumbing profile you can't back up invites both a bad match and a possible guideline problem.
The primary category is the eligibility gate. Every other optimization is capped by it, and changing it is one of the few edits that can move rankings within days.
Common questions
How many categories can I add to a Google Business Profile?
One primary and up to nine additional categories. Use the ones you actually provide — irrelevant categories confuse relevance rather than expanding it.
Does changing my primary category hurt my ranking?
It can move rankings in either direction, and the edit puts the profile through automated review, so expect a few unstable days. When the current primary is wrong, changing it is still the right call.
