Dropped out of the Google map pack? Here's how to find out why.

A sudden drop is almost always a change: an edit you made, a filter Google applied, a competitor's surge, or an algorithm update. A gradual drop is decay — reviews stopped, posts stopped, and the profiles above you kept moving.

Short answer: Businesses drop out of the Google map pack when their profile changes and gets re-reviewed, when Google's proximity filter tightens, when a competitor overtakes them on reviews and prominence, or after a core or local algorithm update. Start by confirming whether the drop was sudden or gradual — sudden drops trace to a specific change, gradual drops trace to stalled review velocity and activity.

First question: did it fall off a cliff, or slide?

A cliff — top three on Monday, invisible on Tuesday — points at something discrete. An edit to name, category, address, or hours that put the profile back into review. A suspension. A duplicate that surfaced. A filter treating you as too similar to another listing at the same address. Or a local algorithm update, which you can confirm by checking whether every competitor also shuffled.

A slide is a different diagnosis. Review velocity stalled while the shop above you kept collecting. Your last post was in March. Photos are two years old. Nothing is broken — you simply stopped feeding the signals that prominence is calculated from, and prominence decays.

The third possibility gets missed constantly: nothing changed except where you're standing. Map pack results are heavily proximity-weighted, and checking rankings from your own office or a different device tells you almost nothing. A rank grid across the metro is the only honest measurement.

Recovery timelines differ accordingly. A reverted edit can restore within days. A prominence slide takes 30–90 days of consistent review flow, posting, and profile completeness to climb back.

The diagnostic sequence

  1. 01
    1. Check for a suspension or pending edit
Open the dashboard. Any suspension notice, pending edit, or "under review" flag explains the drop immediately and everything else can wait.
  2. 02
    2. Look at what you changed
Name, primary category, address, service areas, hours, website URL — any edit in the last 30 days puts the listing back through automated review, and some of those reviews demote before they resolve.
  3. 03
    3. Compare against who replaced you
Open the profiles now ranking above you. Count reviews, check the date of their most recent review and post, and read their categories and service list. Usually the gap is obvious and it's usually reviews.
  4. 04
    4. Run a grid, not a search
Measure rank at points across the whole metro. Most "drops" turn out to be a shrinking radius rather than a disappearance — you still hold the center and lost the edges, which is a prominence problem.
  5. 05
    5. Rebuild the signals in order
Reviews first — velocity is the fastest-moving lever you control. Then completeness: categories, services, attributes, photos, Q&A. Then activity: weekly posts and fresh photos. That order matches how quickly each one moves the grid.

Other Google Business Profile problems we fix

Not showing on Maps
Nine times out of ten it is one of six things: the profile isn't verified, it's suspended, it's a duplicate, the address or service area is wrong, the category is wrong, or you're simply outside the search radius you're testing from. Work through them in that order.
Profile suspended
Suspensions come in two flavors — soft and hard — and they are almost always triggered by an edit, an address problem, or a guideline violation Google's automated systems flagged. Fix the underlying cause first, then file one clean reinstatement request with evidence.
Verification failed
Video verification is now the default for most service businesses, and it fails for predictable reasons: the recording didn't establish location, didn't show proof of management, or was cut into pieces. One continuous take that hits all three checkpoints passes.
Reviews not showing
Reviews disappear for three reasons: the spam filter caught them, the reviewer's account was flagged, or someone reported them. Most filtered reviews are recoverable, and most are caused by how the review was requested rather than what it said.
Wrong info on profile
Google accepts edits from users, from third-party data, and from its own machine learning. If your hours, address, phone, or category keep reverting, something outside your dashboard is feeding Google a different answer — and until you fix that source, the edits will keep coming back.
Duplicate listing
Duplicates split your reviews, split your ranking signals, and send customers to a phone number you may not even own anymore. The fix is to claim the duplicate and request a merge so the review history consolidates onto the listing you keep.

Common questions

Why did my Google map pack ranking drop overnight?

Overnight drops usually trace to a profile edit that triggered re-review, a suspension, a newly surfaced duplicate, or a local algorithm update. Check the dashboard for notices first, then review any edits from the previous 30 days.

How long does it take to recover map pack rankings?

If a reverted edit or resolved suspension caused it, days to a couple of weeks. If the cause is lost prominence, expect 30–90 days of steady review flow, posting, and profile completeness before the grid moves back.

Does posting on Google help me recover?

Posts aren't a direct ranking factor, but they keep the profile active and lift click-through and conversion from the listing you do get. The ranking work is categories, completeness, and review velocity — posts keep the profile alive while those compound.

Can you show me exactly where I rank?
