Review management

Review management is the ongoing process of asking customers for reviews, monitoring new reviews as they arrive, and replying to every one of them. For a local business it centers on Google, because Google reviews feed both the map pack ranking and the decision of the person comparing listings.

It has three moving parts: generation (asking every finished customer, at the right moment, with a one-tap link), monitoring (knowing the moment a review lands), and response (a reply to every review, positive or negative).

Good review management never filters who gets asked based on how happy they seem. Sending only happy customers to Google is called review gating and breaks Google's rules.

Most businesses get the reply part half-done and skip the asking entirely. The asking is what moves review count, and review count is what moves ranking.

Why it matters

Review count, recency, and replies are among the strongest signals a local business can actually control, and they're the first thing a new customer reads.

Common questions

How much does review management cost?

Software runs from about $50 to $400+ a month; agencies often charge more. RapidLocal is $99 a month, with requests, reactivation, AI replies, and the widget all included.

Is review management the same as reputation management?

Review management is the core of it. Reputation management sometimes adds press, social monitoring, or suppressing search results; for a local service business, reviews are 90% of the work.
